Creating profile on the fly7/18/2007 6:32:33 PM

Hi,

I need to have users seamlessly move from an old application to the new application with the security based on ASP.Net membership profile. The users are authenticated in the old application and their credentials are stored in the browsers cookies. My question is if it is possible to set up a page in the new ASP.Net application to read the cookies, create a dummy user with the profiles and roles needed, log it in so the users can seamlessly navigate the new application without having to register for a new account?

Thanks,
Mo

Reading the old application's authentication cookie is possible, as shown in this blog entry: (Posted by ShepherdWeb in another thread)

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. Let me explain more about what I am trying to do. Lets say an ASP application sets a cookie in the browser

Response.CooKies("UserRole")="Group_User"

Response.Cookies("UserName")="JohnDoe"

and redirects to another ASP.Net App

Response.Redirect("ASPNETPAGE.aspx")

Now on the ASPNETPAGE.ASPX I need to do something like this

ProfileCommon p = (ProfileCommon) ProfileCommon.Create(Request.Cookies["UserName"], true);

 Roles.AddUserToRole(Request.Cookies["UserName"], Request.Cookies["UserRole"])

p.save();

....and login automatically so the user can access the resources available after authentication

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
