External http://username:password@www.securesite.org9/16/2003 6:42:59 PM

I am trying to embed/pass a username/password for an external document directory into the URL itself e.g.:

http://username:password@www.securesite.org/ntfsprotecteddir

but the browser is asking for the username/password again.

Once the user enters the username:password again everything works fine, as the browser is 'logged in.'

Any ideas?

I think (though I'm not sure) that will only work for basic authentication on a website. If the site is configured to use windows authentication, I think the browser is unable to just use the information in the url and then performs a windows authentication (perhaps that's the dialog box you see). What form of Authentication is that website using and are NTFS permissions overriding the site settings?

Using basic forms authentication. NTFS settings are subservient - not part of the site authentication.

I found a workaround.

One can use a minimum sized (maximized) IFrame to login http://username:password@www.securesite.org on the same page to achieve functionality.
